Tyre Labels Explained: Fuel Efficiency, Wet Grip & Noise

Every new tyre sold in Ireland carries an EU label — and customers increasingly ask what it means. Being able to read it back to them in plain English is a quick way to build trust and help them choose. Here's the whole label, decoded.

Fuel efficiency (A to E)

The top rating measures rolling resistance — how much energy the tyre wastes as it turns. An A-rated tyre rolls more easily than an E-rated one, so the engine works less and the driver burns less fuel. Over the life of a set, that difference adds up on the pump, which is a strong selling point for high-mileage drivers.

Wet grip (A to E)

This grades how well the tyre stops on a wet road. The gap matters more than customers realise: braking from motorway speed, the difference between an A and an E rating can be several car lengths. This is the rating to lead with when safety is the priority — families, commuters, anyone doing serious miles.

External noise (decibels + wave rating)

The label shows the tyre's external rolling noise in decibels, alongside a class of A, B or C (shown as sound waves). A is the quietest, C the loudest. It's about noise the tyre makes for those outside the car, but quieter tyres usually mean a more comfortable cabin too — an easy upsell for refinement-focused buyers.

The snow and ice icons

Newer labels also carry two icons worth knowing:

  • 3PMSF (three-peak mountain snowflake): the tyre meets a set standard for severe snow conditions — the mark to look for on genuine winter and all-season tyres.

  • Ice grip icon: performance on icy roads, aimed at Nordic conditions.

The QR code

Every current label includes a QR code linking to the EU's EPREL product database, where the full technical details of that exact tyre are held. Handy if a customer wants to dig deeper.

Reading the label back to customers

The label is a sales tool, not just a sticker. "This one's rated B for wet grip and A for fuel — it'll stop shorter and cost you less at the pump" turns a spec into a reason to buy. Fitters who explain the label sell up more often, because customers understand what they're paying for.

Every tyre we supply carries its full EU label, so you and your customers always know exactly what they're getting.
